“And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves!  Should not the shepherds feed the flocks?  Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock.  The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.  And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered.  My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.  Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock; Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds: and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.” (Ezek 34:1-10) 

There is no doubt who the Lord is chastising here in the book of Ezekiel, 34^th Chapter.  It should be clearly evident that he’s not speaking against “natural” shepherds who tend to the flock of “natural” sheep, but his anger is clearly kindled against Spiritual leaders, rulers, etc. who had not fulfilled their calling to FEED HIS PEOPLE!   They had become self centered and selfish, having no concern for the spiritual welfare of the sheep in allowing many to wander aimlessly without proper spiritual supervision and guidance thus placing them in the position of being attacked and devoured by their enemy.   The cries of the sheep were ignored by these shepherds.  They disregarded the weak and vulnerable, and abandoned the broken hearted. They cared not for their spiritual or natural hunger, but made certain they were well fed.  This all was greatly displeasing to The Lord, thus he declared the sheep would be removed from their care, as having them care for the sheep was like having NO shepherd at all.  

This same chastisement to the shepherds of Israel,  given by the Lord through the prophet Ezekiel, applies also to the “spiritual leaders” of “The Church” today, to those who have failed to feed and nourish the sheep as were called to do. For there are some who have sought from the sheep to be FED themselves rather than to feed, to be served rather than to serve, and who have allowed the sheep to wander astray, rather than draw them back into the fold.  

The work of a shepherd is a most serious work as is any work done for the Glory of God.  Sheep are very vulnerable, timid and if they are not fed properly and lack spiritual covering, they are an easy open target for an attack from the enemy.  Thus, a shepherd must possess a heart of great love for the sheep and a desire to tend to their spiritual and/or physical needs always keeping a close attentive eye on each member of the flock.  When one wanders away from the fold, the shepherd must go after him, with genuine and tender love seeking that which is lost.  But, instead many shepherds have turned away being only concern of themselves, while the sheep have wandered away to other pastures feeding off the spiritually destructive food given elsewhere.   They’ve become sick with bodies consumed by disease and some have even perished because they’ve received NO spiritual nourishment while under your care thus they began feeding upon that which purpose was to spiritually destroy them.  Being hungry, they fed upon the meat of lies while you who possessed the meat of TRUTH withheld their nourishment.  Instead you fed them only a little long enough to fleece their goods, and when you became full, you sent them on their way to fend for themselves.  The Lord Jesus being our GREAT SHEPHERD has appointed some to demonstrate their love for him by tending to his sheep and yet not all who’ve been called have fulfilled his will.  For one to neglect the sheep, such a one is showing their lack of genuine love for the Lord.  For when the Lord commanded His disciple Peter to “Feed My sheep”, he first asked him… “Do you LOVE me?”  As if the one way Peter could demonstrate his Love for The Lord, was to Love and feed the Lord’s sheep. 

So, who will put aside self to care for the Lord’s sheep?   Who will LOVE them with the Love of the Lord Jesus?  Who will care for them and feed them real spiritual nourishment being the TRUTH of God’s Word?   Who will chase after the one that has wandered astray and lovingly bring him back to the fold?  Who will seek to serve them and not desire to be served?  Who will seek to give to them expecting nothing in return?  Who will follow after the Great Shepherd, hearing HIS voice and surrendering to HIS will when caring for HIS sheep?  “Who Will Shepherd the Flock?”  If none is willing, I say: HERE I AM LORD…..SEND ME!
