"NOT MY WILL BUT THINE"

“Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.   And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.  Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.  And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless NOT AS I WILL, BUT AS THOU WILT.  And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and said unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?  Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.   He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, THY WILL BE DONE.  And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.   And he left them and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the SAME words.  Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.  Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.

No one, except the Father alone can understand the depth of anguish and pain our precious Lord must have been feeling during this time.  It is apparent the “inward” pain was so intense, one of the other gospels explain the Lord sweat as being that of great drops of blood.  He was about to be led away, to be executed for crimes that he had not committed.  Knowing what lied ahead of him, I believe, the knowledge of the physical pain he would endure would be less painful than knowing upon that hour he would be separated from the Father.  Once sin was laid upon him, the Father would have to look away, He would have to remove his Spirit as He could not stand in the presence of sin.  Though his body would be broken, would be bruised, would be beaten beyond recognition, the physical pain would be indescribable, even more than this, would be the inward pain of being separated from Father for even a moment.  To feel the utter loneliness, the despair, the depth of such intense isolation was nearly unbearable.  The very thought of it would bring upon anguish and such inner pain that all one could do is cry out to the Father.  We can only understand a very small portion of what our Lord had felt.   His pain was beyond anything we’ve ever experienced or shall.  However, each one of us, because of sin at one time or another in our lives have found ourselves separated from the Father and it is an utterly lonely, painful and most difficult situation to be in when the presence of the Holy Spirit is no longer felt.  Many can think back, before meeting the Lord, when there was so much emptiness inside all that was felt was utter hopelessness and loneliness.  Nothing could fill the void inside, although many things were tried.  But, no matter what we tried to put IN, the void remained until we surrendered to the Lord, and received fellowship with His Spirit.  That emptiness, anguish, separation from Father we once felt, is what our Lord felt, only on a much larger scale.

In the midst of His pain, in the midst of his anguish the Lord cries out to the Father O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless NOT AS I WILL, BUT AS THOU WILT He cries a second time, O my father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, THY WILL BE DONE. Yet a third time he cries out to Father, using the same words and surrendering totally to the Father’s will, he gives of himself to be the sacrificial lamb of God.  Although the Lord knew of the pain both physically and emotionally that awaited him, he knew also of the victory which lied beyond the pain.  He knew there was but ONE way the plan of God would be fulfilled though him, and because of his unfailing love for you and I, and seeing the VICTORY which lied AHEAD, our Savior, our Master, The King of kings and Lord of Lords, our GREATEST TEACHER OF OBEDIENCE declared: NOT MY WILL, BUT THINE!

What would have happened if the Lord had chose to not surrender to the will of the Father.  If he’d said enough is enough, these people don’t love me nor the Father.  Why should I die for them?  What would have happened if he’d sought a less painful way to fulfill his mission an “easier way out”?  If he’d said there has to be a better way to do this, where the people may still be saved and I wouldn’t have to give my life. If he’d done this my friends, we would then still be seeking the blood of bulls and goats for the atonement of our sins, would still be bound by the letter of the law, would not have direct access to the Father but would find ourselves separated from Him, would not be joint heirs with the KING, and there would have been NO door to salvation and eternal life with the Father.  But, through the SUFFERINGS of our beloved Savior we now have the privledge and honor of being called the sons and daughters of God; we now have direct access to our Father through his son Jesus Christ our Lord;  our sins have been washed clean by the blood of the Lamb of God; we are now JOINT HEIRS with our Lord so what is his is ours; we are no longer strangers but citizens of the Kingdom; we have now been offered the greatest gift of all, eternal life through our acceptance of Him; every promise given NOW belongs to us; we have authority now in HIS NAME to break the bondage and chains of darkness; we have been given a helper, a teacher, a companion, a friend, a comforter, God’s very own Spirit to lead and guide us in the ways of our Father that we may be pleasing to HIM; because of HIM NO weapon formed against us shall prosper; because of HIM sickness nor disease shall invade our house which is the temple of the Living God; because of HIM demons tremble at the mere mentioning of his name;  because of HIM we can do all things as HE gives us strength; because of HIM we can declare: O Death where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory as HE has conquered them both; because of HIM we can say with surety Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I SHALL FEAR NO EVIL, for thou ART WITH ME; because of HIM we have been redeemed from the curse of the law, because of HIM THERE IS HOPE!   All this and more my friends because HE said to the Father “NOT MY WILL, BUT THINE”

And now we MUST do the same.   Just as the Lord saw the VICTORY awaiting before the persecution and sufferings began, and during the horrific pain, we to must look beyond the shadows of our afflictions and see what lies ahead.  The Lord didn’t suffer for nothing, and neither are any of us suffering for nothing!  Since the foundation of the world God had a purpose, a plan, thus he gave his only son to fulfill this plan.  We now reap the benefits of our Lords OBEDIENCE!   Just as our Father had a most awesome plan for our salvation, He also has a plan for each and every one of our lives.  He knows the beginning and end to all things and in this walk, there are no shortcuts but ONE road we must stay on.  We may stumble and fall but  if we keep pressing forward we will see there is VICTORY ahead and, there is but ONE WAY to receive it.  We MUST SAY TO THE FATHER: “NOT MY WILL, BUT THINE”…..GLORIFY THYSELF MY LORD!  Through the suffering, you’ll obtain the prize and then…..there is the promise of rest!

“FOR I RECCKON THAT THE SUFFERINGS OF THIS PRESENT TIME ARE NOT WORTHY TO BE COMPARED WITH THE GLORY  WHICH SHALL BE REVEALED IN US.”  (Rom 8:18)

I love you all so very much. Have a blessed week in the Lord and remember: Whatever we do, do ALL for the GLORY of GOD, who ALONE is worthy of the GLORY and the PRAISE!

May the peace of the Lord be with you today and always…….
